Scenarios & Long Distance Forecasts

Long-term planning is vital for the railway. A clear vision can enable efficient planning, secure investment and promote a sustainable railway for future generations. The Scenarios & Long Distance Forecasts document considers how demand for long distance rail services both passenger and freight might be impacted by four alternative future scenarios. These scenarios are based on the consideration of the degree of sustainability of transport (and rail in particular) and the UKs standing in a worldwide economy. Forecasts have been prepared using a variety of drivers that can be applied as a new tool for long-term rail planning work.

Network RUS: Scenarios & Long Distance Forecasts was released for consultation in Spring 2009 and the final document was published on 2nd June 2009. This updated version has a revised Figure 8.18 on page 80.
